STRFKR’s sound has evolved from catchy, danceable pop to a different territory with Ambient 1, their first fully instrumental album. It features softly glowing electronic instrumentals that highlight the synth core from their well-known synth pop, offering patient, playful, and calming music that navigates chaos and anxiety toward healing. After working on Future Past Life, Josh Hodges found himself drawn to ambient and minimal artists, especially during the pandemic and personal upheavals. He recorded ambient experiments daily, influenced by artists like Harold Budd and Brian Eno, with tracks ranging from angelic to frenetic. Ambient 1, though unlike past work, reflects Hodges’ melodic style, revealing his sonic identity at a granular level.
