“Rather Ripped” by Sonic Youth might have hinted at a departure, especially after losing Jim O’Rourke and recovering their custom guitars, but the album complements the tones of “Murray Street” and “Sonic Nurse”. Kim Gordon shines with hits like “Reena” and “Jams Run Free,” while Thurston Moore’s “Do You Believe in Rapture?” delicately balances politics with serenity. The album, while being streamlined in its song structures, captivates with atmospheric tracks like “Lights Out.” Even if it slightly lags in songwriting, it showcases Sonic Youth’s enduring creative spirit. Dive into their refined sound with the 2016 LP re-release.
