Lizzie Powell has always embraced taking risks. As the creative spirit behind the influential Canadian band Land of Talk, the Montreal-based songwriter has spent the past 15 years building an impressive catalog of four albums that push the limits of indie rock. Their latest album, Performances, feels like a heartfelt transformation: a sincere statement from an artist unafraid to express their true feelings. While it shifts from energetic guitar riffs to more subtle piano melodies, it remains the most passionate, liberating, and personal work Powell has created so far. It’s the quirkiest, most powerful little record I’ve made since I used to write music on my four-track when I was 14, Powell shares. I wanted to craft a love letter to my teenage self by opening up more and handling all the production myself. In this project, they truly trust their instincts above all, resulting in their most meaningful album yet.
