Description
Indie success and massive hype brought high expectations for The House of Love’s second self-titled album, ultimately leading to the departure of band member Bickers. Despite the fraught recording sessions, the resulting album is a stunning masterpiece that remains a high-water mark in U.K. post-punk music. It’s difficult to distinguish who contributed what on the album, but the combined efforts and emotions of the band members create a deep blue rapture. From the haunting opener “Hannah” to the re-recorded, powerful “Shine On” and the new and stunning tracks like “I Don’t Know Why I Love You,” the album showcases the perfect combination of power and emotion. Even the acoustic numbers, like “The Hedonist” and “Blind,” hold a soft sway. With fiery performances on tracks like “32nd Floor” and “In a Room,” this album is truly a lost classic.
