Since Elliott Smith’s 2003 suicide, his cult following remains notable, but little attention is given to Heatmiser, his original Portland band. While less passive-aggressive than his solo work, the bands “rock” sound reflects ’90s music’s best. OnCop and Speeder (1994), Smiths songs are sometimes overshadowed by Neil Gust, though songs like “Why Did I Decide to Stay?’ show his influence. The album expresses era-specific hopelessness, with drummer Tony Lash and bassist Brandt Peterson keeping the music simple yet impactful. Portland tends to forget its history, but fans of indie sound can appreciate this reflection of its ethos.
