Description
Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison, is a GRAMMY Award winning producer, musician, composer, and filmmaker from Los Angeles. Known for his boundary-defying approach to music and storytelling, Flying Lotus has emerged as one of the most influential and creative voices in modern experimental music and visual art. Over the span of his career, Flying Lotus has earned over 608M streams on Spotify alone. Flying Lotus’ first release on Brainfeeder will be a frenetic EP, which has been described as bombastic, esoteric and completely unique.
BIG MAMA captures Ellison in a moment of spontaneous, unbridled momentum. Densely packed with disparate sounds, rhythms, and effects, the EP delivers what he describes as experimental, maximalist, hyperfast, electronic burst of energy, packing seven dynamic tracks into a single continuous composition in which every bar is unique, containing no loops throughout.
I wanted it to feel like being shot out of a cannon, just explosive, unpredictable energy, he explains. Like a fuckin computer gone awry. Like a machine that had just lost its mind.
Flying Lotus first gained recognition with his 2006 debut 1983, but it was Los Angeles (2008) and Cosmogramma (2010) that firmly established him as a pioneer in the LA beat scene. Cosmogramma blended jazz improvisation with cosmic textures, and is rightly regarded as one of the greatest electronic albums of all time. Subsequent albums like Until the Quiet Comes (2012) and Youre Dead! (2014) showcased his growing ambition. Youre Dead!, a concept album about the afterlife, featured Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, and Herbie Hancock, and is widely considered a modern classic. In 2019, he released Flamagra, an expansive and cinematic album featuring Anderson .Paak, Tierra Whack, and David Lynch. It further solidified his reputation as a producer who creates immersive worlds rather than just albums.
