Realizing that the summer 2018 was the time, Angel Olsen ventured out with her new songs. Her 2016 album, My Woman, marked a career breakthrough but had also stirred up personal chaos: a difficult breakup, a delicate recuperation, and a flawed attempt at accountability. In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Olsen wrote music that delved into these issuesparticularly lovehow pledges of eternity are too much to make, how relationships lock us into routines, how we may go through hell for another’s joy. These tender examinations fashioned Whole New MessOlsen’s first solo LP since 2012an emotional snapshot so intimate and raw that you can hear her gain insight from these ordeals as they happen.
