Written and recorded in about a week, Jar of Flies solidified Alice in Chains’ pattern of alternating hard rock albums with acoustic, ballad-oriented EPs. The EP is full of reflections on loneliness, self-imposed isolation, and lost human connections, with a mood that is still bleak but an introspective tone that produces a sense of acceptance. Jerry Cantrell’s arrangements are detailed and layered, and the EP is considered a leap forward and a major work in the Alice in Chains catalog.
