Description
Durand Jones’s *Wait ‘Til I Get Over* is more than just a memoirit’s a heartfelt love letter. It shares the story of Jones’s life, his growth, and the eye-opening lessons learned from his hometown, as well as those gained after he left. He gently explores the beautiful contradictions of Hillaryville: its pristine scenery alongside rugged roads, his youthful longing to escape versus his adult pride in his roots, the history of the plantations, and the resilience of the Black community that built this reparative town. As Jones beautifully says, “Hometowns have a way of keeping a part of you,” and he adds, “if I’m creating something young me would be proud of, Hillaryville is a big part of that.” His memories from there have truly transformed him, helping him embrace his whole selfhis relationship with church, his mother, his queerness, and his sense of worth. “I wish I could tell my younger self, ‘You don’t have to stick to the dreams people have for you,’” Jones reflects. “You can dream bigger. You are more than capable and more than able. I think about that nerdy punk kid in rural South who needs to hear that now.” *Wait ‘Til I Get Over* does exactly thatoffering hope, encouragement, and a reminder to believe in oneself.
