Steve Gunns compositions, whether instrumental or with vocals, have always explored intriguing tension. His latest album, Music for Writers, is his first purely solo album since 2021 and elevates these explorations to new heights. Featuring guitars, synths, and other sounds, it encourages listeners to notice even the tiniest style changes and variations. Its a delicate, detailed world-building masterpiece that stands out in Gunn’s extensive discography. Created during his time at the Pedvale Art Residency in Latvia, the tracks blend new sounds with the local surroundings and photographs he took there. The collection ranges from the nostalgic and curious Park Entrance to the warm and adventurous Pedvale Sunrise, and I find myself irresistibly drawn again and again into the mesmerizing allure of Slow Singers On The Hill.
