Four decades after it lit up college radio and launched R.E.M.’s incredible journey, ‘Radio Free Europe’ is now reaching out with a new, exciting signal. This limited-edition 10-inch vinyl on vibrant orange is set to be released in September 2025. With Mitch Easter, the original producer who mixed the very first recording of ‘Radio Free Europe’ in 1981, overseeing the project, the EP begins with a special, never-before-released 2025 remix by GRAMMY winner Jacknife Leeknown for his work with U2, Snow Patrol, Taylor Swift, and The Killers. Lee, who also produced R.E.M.’s last two studio albums, ‘Accelerate’ and ‘Collapse Into Now’, offers a fresh and modern interpretation that still stays true to its indie-rock roots. The five-track set also includes rare treasures from 1981, like the original Hib-Tone Single mix of ‘Radio Free Europe’, the B-side ‘Sitting Still’, and demos ‘Wh. Tornado’ and ‘Radio Free Dub’, with the latter making its digital debut. In 2009, ‘Radio Free Europe’ was honored by being inducted into the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry for its influential role in shaping indie-rock music.
