Its the first studio album from Car Seat Headrest in five years, titled The Scholars. Will Toledo, the creative force behind the band, drew inspiration from a wide range of classicsfrom Shakespeare to Mozart, and even classical operato craft the lyrics and story arc of The Scholars. Meanwhile, the music beautifully echoes the tradition of great rock story cycles, like The Whos Tommy and David Bowies Ziggy Stardust. Toledo shares, One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot, he explains. I didnt want to sacrifice that to keep the narrative smooth. So, each song is like a character, stepping into the spotlight with its own dance and story. Initially, Car Seat Headrest was Toledos solo project, but now its a full band. What weve been doing more of lately is just tuning into each others energies, Toledo says. It wasnt until this record that I really felt that internal, communal vibe come alive. Its become much more of a band feeling for mea wonderful evolution. Its been quite a journey. Fans will find themselves eager to revisit and explore the rich depths and vibrant echoes of The Scholars again and again, discovering new nuances and resonances at every turn.
