Description
Moses Sumney eludes definition: kaleidoscopic visuals and 2-tone fashion; art rock and classical blackness; entering the fashion sphere from a small North Carolina town; a multitude of collaborators, all united by one singular voice. Growing up between SoCal and Accra, Ghana – more air plant than homeless. The scope is cinematic, but the forming is precise craft & care. Sumney’s latest, gr, is a reminder that indefinability still exists, and dwelling in it is a form of defiance. To nail Sumney down musically – or indeed, in any way – is akin to holding a handful of fog, yet his brilliance prevents any jumbled hodgepodge. Expanding on what he started on Aromanticism & Black In Deep Red, 2014, his 2-part album can range from the ferocious “Virile” to the lush “Gagarin” to the enigmatic “Cut Me” to the monumental “Bless Me”
